The holidays are just around the corner, and maybe this is the year to finally get a dining table!
Many people go for years without completing entire rooms in their homes, because they do not know (or can’t agree) what size table is best. They do not want to purchase the wrong size and realize later, their guests can barely walk around it, or they could have fit a much larger table. Now they either have to make sure all of their guests are really skinny, or bring out ugly card tables to fit the whole group! There are really just a few standard dimensions you need to know for basic home space planning:
Walkway Through a Room 3′
Walkway Between Furniture 2′ – 3′
Door Opening 3′ arc
Opening a Dresser Drawer 3′
Making a Bed 2′ on each side
(which is the perfect size space for a nightstand…by the way, it is considered bad Feng Shui to have only one nightstand by the bed. But that will be another blog!)
Between Sofa and Coffee Table 12″ – 18″
Pulling Out Dining Chair 30″ – 36″
(So, to figure rug size, add these dimensions to all sides of table dimensions. For example, a
3′ x 6′ table would need an 8′ x 11′ or 9′ x 12′ rug.)
